Slide 2 — Unboxing and safety

Check the package

Before you open

Genuine device and tamper checks

Confirm packaging is sealed and contains the device, USB cable, recovery cards, and quick start guide. Do not use a device that shows signs of tampering. Ledger devices ship with official documentation — if anything looks altered, contact Ledger support via the official site.

  • Only buy from official ledger.com or authorized resellers.
  • Never share your recovery phrase with anyone.
  • Keep the recovery cards and box in a secure location until setup.

Security first: Ledger will never ask for your 24-word recovery phrase over chat or email.

Slide 3 — Initial setup

Power & device onboarding

Quick checklist

Follow these steps in order

Plug in your Ledger device and power it on. Use the on-device buttons to choose your language, create a new wallet or restore an existing one, and set a PIN code. The device generates a 24-word recovery phrase — write it down exactly, in order, on the supplied recovery sheet.

  • Choose a PIN you can remember but is not easily guessable.
  • Write the 24-word phrase by hand — do not store it digitally.
  • Confirm the phrase when prompted by the device.

Slide 4 — Install Ledger Live

Ledger Live — your app hub

Download and verify

Windows, macOS, Linux, mobile

Ledger Live is the desktop and mobile app that manages accounts, installs apps on your device, and connects to networks. Always download Ledger Live from Ledger.com/start® and verify the download with any provided checksums or instructions.

After installing, open Ledger Live, create a new profile, then connect your device and allow Ledger Live to detect it. Use Ledger Live to add accounts for the cryptocurrencies you want to manage.

Slide 5 — Manage apps and accounts

Install apps on the device

Apps are coin-specific

Storage & space management

Ledger devices use small apps for different blockchains (Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, etc.). Use Ledger Live’s Manager tab to install the apps you need. If your device runs out of space, you can safely uninstall an app — your crypto is preserved on the blockchain and accessible again once reinstalled.

  • Install only the apps you use to conserve device space.
  • Always confirm transactions on the device screen, not just in software.
  • Use multiple accounts if you want to segregate funds by purpose.

Slide 6 — Sending & receiving crypto

Workflow for transactions

Confirm on device

Double-check addresses

To receive, open the account in Ledger Live, click “Receive”, and verify the address shown on the device matches the one in the app. To send, create a transaction in Ledger Live, review fees and destination address, then confirm the details on your device. The on-device confirmation is the final authority.

Never copy-paste addresses from untrusted sources — always verify on your hardware device’s screen.

Slide 7 — Connect to dApps and Web3

Using Ledger with wallets and dApps

Browser extensions & WalletConnect

Best practices

Ledger works with browser wallets and WalletConnect to interact with decentralized applications. When connecting, choose the Ledger option and review every permission. Approve signature requests only after reading what you are signing; signatures can grant access or approve transactions.

  • Limit dApp permissions — revoke access when no longer needed.
  • Use separate accounts for high-risk dApps or experiments.
  • Keep firmware and Ledger Live updated before connecting to new services.

Slide 8 — Backup & recovery

Protect your 24-word recovery phrase

Recovery — when to use

Safe storage options

Your 24-word phrase is the ultimate backup. Store it offline, in a secure, fireproof location. Consider using steel backups designed for seed phrases if you want maximum durability. Do not photograph, type, or email your recovery phrase. If you lose the phrase, you risk permanent loss of funds.

If you ever need to restore, use the Ledger device’s restore option and enter the words on the device — never on a computer or phone keyboard unless explicitly directed by an official Ledger procedure.

Slide 9 — Troubleshooting and support

Common issues

Device not recognized / stuck

Where to find help

Common fixes include restarting the device, reinstalling Ledger Live, and checking USB cables. If problems persist, visit the official support center on Ledger.com for device-specific debugging steps. Avoid third-party tutorials that request your recovery phrase — official support will never demand it.

  • Check firmware version in Ledger Live Manager.
  • Try a different USB port or cable; some issues come from faulty connectors.
  • Contact official support only through ledger.com links.
